Medical eye problems unrelated to laser vision correction will be billed to your insurance.

Some of the Canadian ads are suspect.  They hype large type with low costs, but the small print indicates the truth.  Link here to see an example of the claims they have made.

There are additional costs to consider when comparing prices.  The cost of travel, overnight stays in hotels, the time you (and the companion who must go with you to help care for you) must take off from work, should all be considered when making your comparison.

2.  Experience:  The skills of Canadian surgeons may or may not be as honed as local surgeons, and you should decide which surgeon you feel most comfortable with. More than likely, you already have an ophthalmologist you know and trust: one who knows your history.

3.  Pre- and post-operative care and comfort:  Multiple trips are required for the entire series of exams, surgery and post-op follow up.  While the surgery itself takes only a few minutes, there is some discomfort and returning to your comfortable home environment will be desirable. 

Although LASIK is very safe, there are some risks involved (which will be described to you by your surgeon), and in the event of complication (flap dislocation, infection, inflammation, other) you will need to be closely watched by your surgeon. Should you choose to have surgery out of the area, you will find it difficult to find a local doctor because of liability problems. Obviously, if you have chosen to stay in Central New York for your surgery, it will make follow up much more comfortable and convenient.
